An introductory course; for students interested in the historical context and connections between art and music. This course will provide an overview of the roots of modern art and music, and related performers, composers and visual artists. Students will be presented in a cross-disciplinary collaboration through instructors from both the music and art departments. Students will spend a quarter studying art and a quarter studying music. The course will not be split to accommodate student preferences. Course includes a visit to the Cleveland Museum of Art and/or The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame & Museum.
Unit 1: Introduction to Course
This unit will introduce the student to art terms, and art criticism. We will discuss how to use correct vocabulary while learning how to describe, analuyze and interpret a work of art.
Lecture #2 Art Criticism
Unit 2: Early America/Pre-colonial
Students will learn how artwork was used and valued among the first inhabitants of the United States as well as the first explorers.

Unit 2: An American Revolution in Art
Students will explore art created before, during and after the American Revolution. We will explore the first artists to recognized artistically and financially in America.

We will discuss the history of the camera and the development of photography as an artform. We will discuss the use of photography during the Civil War and apply that knowledge to modern issues in photojournalism

Unit 4: Impressionism & Realism
Students will explore art styles that were a reaction to the development of the camera. We will start to explore art that would became uniquely American and represent the people in turn of the century America.

Things are getting wild! Modern art is here and we are pushing the boundries while discussing BIG questions such as "What is Art?", "Is this Art?" and "Who decides if Art is Good or Bad?"
